French artist Pascal Amblard painting in the mountains

Mountain painting is a bit more than a “variation” of landscape painting. I see it as a physical commitment. The fascination that mountains exert on you is strong enough to make you hike, climb and ski in a natural environment that is not always safe and of easy access. The reward is the joy of reaching places of wild Beauty. The challenge is then to open oneself to the presence of the landscape, on the spot ( whether you contemplate or draw and paint), and to bring back the memories to the studio.

In this respect, mountain painting stands as a peculiar form of figurative art.
